Eriegal is the youngest[1] of the fourteen Companions who survived the massacre at Tal Quorin. He has a round face, a stout frame, and pale eyes. He possesses a shrewd gift for tactics.

Role in the Story

Spoiler warning: Contains plot elements from multiple books in the series.

Peril's Gate

Third Age 5670: When Jieret assembles a war band to rescue Arithon, Eriegal remains behind in Halwythwood as war captain.

Traitor's Knot

Third Age 5670: When Braggen returns to Halwythwood in the summer, Eriegal accuses him of failing in his protection of Arithon.

Third Age 5671: Eriegal, Sidir, and Braggen ride to Caith-al-Caen to welcome Arithon. After the blood oath between Arithon and Jeynsa, Eriegal keeps watch over Jeynsa at the Willowbrook. The pair discuss Arithon's motives and whether he can be trusted. Eriegal convinces Jeynsa to accept the role of caithdein so she can start a formal inquiry.

When Jeynsa expresses her need to slip away from camp to pursue her suspicions about Arithon, Eriegal loans her an amulet of concealment and covers for her absence in Barach's council. Later, Eriegal finally reveals that Jeynsa went after Arithon but then learns that Jeynsa traveled to the clan seat in Melhalla instead.

Stormed Fortress

Third Age 5671: During the Siege of Alestron, Sidir reveals to Jeynsa that Eriegal has never trusted Arithon. This reason led Caolle to exclude him from the Companions sent to support the Vastmark campaign in Third Age 5647.

Initiate's Trial

Third Age 5674: Eriegal is involved in the Koriani betrayal of Arithon. It is revealed that Elaira pleaded for mercy at Eriegal's trial on Arithon's behalf, in hopes that the clansman might heal from old wounds and find forgiveness. It is also revealed that Braggen served as Eriegal's executor, given his role as Jeynsa's proxy when Barach swore fealty to Arithon.

Third Age 5923: When Dakar visits Rathain's clansmen, Eriegal is considered a traitor and a coward.

Destiny's Conflict

Third Age 5924: It is revealed that, in Third Age 5674, Eriegal brought a circle of 12 senior enchantresses to meet Arithon at Caith-al-Caen as an act of vengeance.

  1. This fact from Initiate's Trial conflicts with Peril's Gate, where Deith is described as the youngest Companion. Also, the Initiate's Trial glossary lists Eriegal as "second youngest".
