Kathtairr is a landmass in the southern ocean on Athera, across the world from the continent of Paravia. The land is described as empty and lifeless, with endless vistas of ochre and gray, and poisoned, alkaline rivers. It was scorched by Cathukodarr's drakefire long before Ath Creator sent the Paravians to Athera.[1] Nothing has grown here since the Age of Dragons.

According to the author, what happened on Kathtairr was an extreme event and the "reason" underpinning the first dreaming of the drakes that generated the response of the Paravian arrival as Ath's gift. There are sections of the planet still "wounded" and this area is one of them, and there is a reason why it cannot be healed.

Kathtairr used to have grimwards, and the Paravians who sealed them paid a terrible price.

Role in the Story

Spoiler warning: Contains plot elements from multiple books in the series.

Fugitive Prince

Third Age 5648 - 5652: Arithon, Dakar, and clansmen search Kathtairr for three years, hoping to find the hidden Paravian presence. Dakar finally reveals that the Fellowship of Seven always knew that Kathtairr was lifeless, but needed to buy time for some larger crisis.

Initiate's Trial

Third Age 5923: In late winter, Seshkrozchiel tells Davien of his desire to undo the damage done to this continent. In early spring, their paired creativity causes a plant to grow, triggering changes in resonance across Athera. Asandir and Sethvir recognize that the resonance shift may have been enough to preserve Paravian survival and maintain the Compact.

Destiny's Conflict

Third Age 5925: Asandir is dealing with an anomaly in Kathtairr when Sethvir summons him back for an audience with the Koriathain. He travels through a grimward to return to Paravia.
