Role in the Story

Spoiler warning: Contains plot elements from multiple books in the series.

Warhost of Vastmark

Third Age 5646: King Eldir of Havish has a love of horses and maintains a chariot team, overseen by his master of horse. During the ransom exchange, Arithon takes an interest in chariot driving, greatly worrying the Fellowship sorcerers, who worry that he might suffer a physical accident. Later, Arithon offers his opinion of chariots in military scenarios:

. . . I scarcely think chariots would be useful on a field of war. Three ransoms in bullion would be needed to buy the collective guts to man them. Fiends alive, those vehicles aren't just fragile, they're treacherous. Willful as a half-swamped longboat, never mind that quantities of horses hitched in harness manage to agree with one another a hopeless portion of the time.[1]

Initiate's Trial

Third Age 5923: The chariot is the preferred means of conveyance for The Hatchet, the Supreme Commander of Armies in the True Sect. His steel chariot is pulled by four white geldings. When the wagon transporting Arithon and Tarens is sabotaged, The Hatchet orders them moved in his chariot. Arithon ejects The Hatchet and gains control of the vehicle, using Shadow as cover for their escape. Outside of town, Arithon removes a shoe from one of the team's horses to ensure that they are not run to exhaustion.

Destiny's Conflict

Third Age 5923: The Hatchet commands from his chariot again during the confrontation with Lysaer outside of Erdane. From his chariot, he fires a spell-turned crossbow bolt that strikes Lysaer in the right eye.
