The Shadows of Mearth (also referred to as the curse of Mearth) is a light-fueled geas designed by Davien to protect his Five Centuries Fountain from meddlers. The geas forces the victim's mind into endless circles around its most painful memories, leading to insanity or amnesia. At some point after Third Age 3140, all the inhabitants of Mearth fell victim to the curse.

In her FAQ, the author has stated that the Shadows originally guarded only the fountain. When Davien was rendered discorporate by the Fellowship, the warding that held the Shadows dissolved and they overran the town of Mearth.[1]

Third Age 5637: Arithon and Lysaer encounter the shadows in the ruins of Mearth and use their combined powers of light and shadow to keep the curse at bay. Just as they enter the Worldsend gate to Paravia, the shadows overrun their defenses and attack Arithon, causing him to endlessly relive the memories of his father's death. Asandir breaks the geas soon after.
