Iyats, commonly known as fiends, are invisible energy sprites, native to Athera. They act like poltergeists, causing mischief and possessing inanimate objects, feeding on human emotion, spellcraft, and natural energy sources like fire, breaking waves, and lightning. Iyats cannot originate thought or emotion themselves, so they are greedily drawn to other sources of complexity like parasites. At one point in history, the iyats were imprisoned in Rockfell Pit. They were released by Davien to add havoc to the rebellion.[1]

Many townsfolk have hanging tin talismans (sometimes called "fiend banes"), intended to repel fiends, but the sound of these generally do not work. A bard with a true sense of pitch can whistle a threnody which will avert fiends, or create an instrument (like bells) that can repeat these three pitches in his absence. Ath's Adepts are also capable of driving off iyats, and the Koriathain can create warding talismans.

Curse of the Mistwraith

Third Age 5637: When a comatose Dakar is removed from West End, iyats attempt to strangle him with his own cloak. Later, Asandir banishes iyats from the attic of a tavern on the way to the Pass of Orlan. When Elaira travels to Erdane, she notes that the fiend banes in the hidden section of the wall-district have real power to repel fiends.

Ships of Merior

Third Age 5645: Dakar attracts a pack of iyats in Jaelot by means of a miscast conjury. After cutting off the flow of power, the iyats rebel by causing havoc along the sea wall where he has been sentenced to hard labor.

Warhost of Vastmark

Third Age 5646: Arithon whistles a threnody aboard the Talliarthe to keep iyats out of his rigging.

Third Age 5647: Dakar blames his shoddy penmanship on nautical charts on iyats who have warped all of his quill pens. Iyats are also drawn to the campaign in Vastmark, where they upset a pike rack and eject the contents of a tool chest in Lysaer's war camp.

Fugitive Prince

Third Age 5652: Iyats have infested a bell founder's shop in Riverton, and Arithon establishes his reputation by ending the infestation and retuning the bell founder's bell.

Grand Conspiracy

Third Age 5669: Iyats bother the caravan that Fionn Areth has been hired to escort in the Pass of Sards.

Peril's Gate

Third Age 5670: When a centaur appears in the camp of the Etarran army, the ensuing chaos draws lurking iyats.

Traitor's Knot

Third Age 5670: Selidie uses the Great Waystone and a sigil in the hull of the Evenstar to draw a fiend storm 300 strong towards the ship. Arithon uses mage talent and music to dampen the impact of the attack. At the edge of failure after an extended defense, Arithon engages his gift of Shadow and flash freezes the iyats, then has them sealed into a pot. Ensorcelled, they resemble dark, pale flecks of marshlight.

Third Age 5671: Arithon experiments with his captured iyats and uses them to repair the Evenstar. When the Koriathain spy on the ship through their sigil, he enspells an iyat directly into the Great Waystone. Arithon also uses iyats to rob a caravan without bloodshed in Selkwood. He gathers more iyats on the waves while sailing to Southshire. In Etarra, Arithon uses iyats as part of his plan to disenfranchise sunwheel priests.

Initiate's Trial

Third Age 5922: Iyats are drawn to a bonfire that Arithon has built in the center of the road to Kelsing. The subsequent chaos gives Arithon a chance to free Tarens from captivity.

After years of storing the Great Waystone in total darkness above the frostline in the Skyshiel Mountains, Selidie Prime is finally able to extract the rogue iyat from its matrix.

Third Age 5923: Dakar infests the war lodge of Cosach s'Valerient with iyats in order to gain his attention and an audience. After receiving a prescient vision, he departs at speed down Mathorn Road, attracting and dispelling two packs of iyats along the way.

Third Age 5923: Arithon recalls his defense of the Evenstar when captured on a fishing lugger in Mainmere Bay and draws iyats to derig the lugger and hog-tie the smuggler who kidnapped him. He and Tarens are eventually taken by a True Sect blockade ship which brings them ashore in Torwent. Arithon uses iyats to sabotage the wagon transporting them to execution and to seed chaos in town when he comandeers The Hatchet's chariot.

Destiny's Conflict

Third Age 5923: Vivet's unhappiness draws iyats to the Ettinmere Settlement. The circle of shamans demands restitution for time lost but Arithon refuses, citing his ability to banish iyats on his own.

Sentenced to death for threatening the integrity of the settlement's borders, Arithon uses iyats to survive a rain of arrows and break Roaco's wand. He demands a restoration of his freedom of movement by threatening to make the shamans look weak before the chaos of a thousand more iyats. Roaco agrees and departs, leaving the rest of the Ettinfolk unaware of the reason for Arithon's survival.

Third Age 5924: Tarens, Cosach, and Dakar find Arithon atop Tiendarion, where the prince is using song and Shadow to capture iyats.

When Cosach's war band is ambushed in Daon Ramon Barrens, Arithon unleashes the iyats he gathered at Tiendarion. This provides Dakar with the space to see Cosach's war band to safety.

Third Age 5925: When a storm forces Arithon, Vivet, and Valien to hole up for days in the Storlain Mountains, Arithon draws iyats from the storm to heat water. Later, he uses iyats to steal the pants of Ettin pursuers caught in his trap.

  • Asandir is known as Fiend-quencher, for his penchant at draining fiends of their energy.
