Mearth is a city in the Red Desert, in the buffer world found through the West Gate. At the time of Curse of the Mistwraith, the city has long been in decay, and all of its inhabitants have succumbed to the Shadows of Mearth. Despite this, the Worldsend gate here is still active.
In her FAQ, the author has stated that the Shadows were originally under ward at the Five Centuries Fountain, but escaped as a side effect of the discorporation of Davien. The author has not yet revealed why the gemcutting population was sent through the West Gate to Mearth, and suggests that it cannot be revealed yet without spoiling the story.

Third Age 5637: The half-brothers pass through Mearth to reach the Worldsend gate to Paravia. Arithon knows of Mearth only through the record of Rauven: he states that the inhabitants were gem cutters, unequal in their craft, until the curse destroyed every inhabitant. The curse was tied to "the fall of a sorcerer", though Rauven's records kept no particulars.
