Rockfell Peak is the highest peak in the Skyshiel Mountains in West Halla, Melhalla, near the border of Rathain. A trail wends its way up to the peak from the northeast, a series of steep switchbacks to a staircase carved by Davien. The staircase is formed from black marble, with leering stone gargoyles keeping watch on the corners. The staircase had railings at one time, but the weather and elements have since eroded them away, leaving only brass newel posts.
The peak is of high enough elevation that it is cold and windy throughout the year.
Through the sorcery of Davien, a deep shaft was cut into the mountain, known as Rockfell Pit. This shaft has consented to be the prison for entities bent in malice against the Law of the Major Balance throughout all three Ages. In Curse of the Mistwraith, it's mentioned that the shaft and the stairs were carved at the same time, fifteen centuries before the book begins. This would put their creation date around Third Age 4100 or so. The pit is described as an incredibly deep well with a wooden ladder leading down to a five-sided chamber scrawled with wards and sigils.
Role in the Story
|Spoiler warning: Contains plot elements from multiple books in the series.|
Curse of the Mistwraith
Third Age 5638: Following the failed coronation at Etarra, Dakar, Asandir, and Kharadmon travel here to secure the Mistwraith. It is secured behind three rings of wards, woven by both corporate and discorporate sorcery.
Third Age 5669: Following an attack on Athera by Morriel, the wards over the pit are affected. Because they must see to the land first, the Fellowship cannot initially tell whether the Mistwraith is in danger of escaping. When the lane surge crests on Winter Solstice, the vibrations travel through Rockfell Peak and into the remnants of the construct that Asandir and Sethvir once used to recall Kharadmon from his trip through the stars.
Third Age 5670: With Asandir unavailable, Luhaine asks for Dakar's consent to help restore the wards around the Pit. Because these wards cross both sides of the veil, they require the skills of a Sorcerer with a physical form and a discorporate one. Dakar consents to share his physical body with Kharadmon to assist. Because of a delay, the trio cannot repair the wards before they would be destroyed by the lane surge on the Spring Equinox. They create stopgap wards to reroute the lane surge around the Pit, and manage to survive the midnight lane crest without catastrophe.
- When securing the Mistwraith, Kharadmon notes that everything confined in Rockfell eventually escapes, with the exception of the iyats, who were released by Davien to seed confusion duing the rebellion.
