Shadows of Mearth
The Shadows of Mearth (also referred to as the curse of Mearth) is a light-fueled geas designed by Davien to protect his Five Centuries Fountain from meddlers. The geas forces the victim's mind into endless circles around its most painful memories, leading to insanity or amnesia. At some point after Third Age 3140, all the inhabitants of Mearth fell victim to the curse.
In her FAQ, the author has stated that the Shadows originally guarded only the fountain. When Davien was rendered discorporate by the Fellowship, the warding that held the Shadows dissolved and they overran the town of Mearth.
